ATHLETE FEATURE: HARRY MCKAY

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Harry McKay is a key forward for the Carlton Blues in the AFL. Harry, 24, recently joined Team Two Times You and spoke to us about how he prepares, performs and recovers to be at his best on game day. 19 JULY 2022

Here at 2XU, we believe our products allow you to perform at your best, and then some. It’s Human Performance Multiplied. So, it feels fitting that Carlton sharpshooter Harry McKay has recently joined Team Two Times You as an Ambassador.

Though perhaps our newest recruit is taking the phrase ‘Human Performance Multiplied’ a little too literally. The jury is still out as to whether or not Harry is also moonlighting for North Melbourne, or whether that is in fact his identical twin brother Ben - the two having never played each other in their seven years in the AFL.

While you make up your own mind about that, one thing we do know for certain: Harry McKay is a giant of the game. Not only does he stand at a towering 204cm (6 foot 8 inches in the old), but the Blues forward has kicked a whopping 165 goals from just over 80 games to cement his spot as one of the premier forwards in the league.

Earlier this season, McKay pulled on his favourite 2XU compression tights along with his Carlton guernsey to officially join Team Two Times You, and he couldn’t be more excited.

“Being able to partner with a brand that's very healthy and promotes active lifestyle is great,” said McKay when visiting 2XU HQ. “I'm always looking to improve where I can and find [an extra] one percent. The compression and recovery tights help me to be a better athlete.”

The ‘Baggers’, who are sitting at fifth on the ladder, are looking ahead to the final's series after one of their most successful seasons in recent years. McKay knows all about the importance of recovery after he spent six weeks on the sideline earlier in the year with a meniscal tear in his knee.

“During the season it's obviously a lot about recovery and trying to feel better after the games to get yourself up for the next week,” said the Coleman Medal winning key forward. “So a lot of recovery and trying to get the body moving again [and anything] to make yourself feel as good as possible.”

Prepare, perform, recover, repeat is another one of our mottos we live by. With the AFL season being 23 weeks long, McKay hopes to steer clear of any other injuries with proper preparation and recovery.

“Other than when I'm wearing my 2XU Recovery Compression tights, I like to go into the steam room and sauna a few times a week to help flush everything out,” says McKay. “What you eat as well is really important so I make sure to get the right amount of food and hydration after the game.”

With Carlton poised to place in the final 8 this year, McKay says it’s always been a “pipe dream” to play on the main stage. “It's always been a dream but for it to be reality and to be able to call it a job is really cool. I'm super lucky to be in the industry and been able to do what I love, so I don't take that for granted and I want to make the most of it while I’m here.”
